Sonic Spinball - Genesis

Many of you must have played pinball game. That cute little game to earn points on hitting target, I personally liked that game very much. Now imagine pinball idea with Sonic. A little weird but that is what Spinball is. Spinball= S + Pinball or you could say Sonic and pinball. It combines Sonic action with video pinball yielding a style all on its own. With the success of Sonic series Sega decided to take the same route which was taken by Nintendo. They placed their lead Mascot, Mario in many different games like in puzzle as Dr. Mario, in sports as Mario Golf, and racing as Mario Kart and Sonic followed the same path with Sonic Spinball. This unusual fusion of Sonic and Plat forming was slightly different from what Nintendo did.

Sonic Spinball arrived in 1993. They presented in the same way as many games used to do like throwing hero into the fortress. But here it was a little different. Here the fortress was modeled with pinball table. The task here was not to clear level quickly but you have to skillfully navigate through stages full of flippers and bumpers. This game is not a platformer but their was platforming element in it.

This time also Sonic has to find a way to defeat Dr. Robotnic. Instead he finds himself trapped in a giant pinball maze that defends the fortress. For this Sonic must collect all the chaos Emeralds in many stages to free his friends and defeat Dr. Robotnik. Acquiring all of them in each stage open the way for boss fight but it is not simple as each gem is hidden or protected in some way and it takes quiet a bit of work to find them. There are bunch of new enemies waiting for Sonic in this game like Roboheads, Krondors and Buzz Bombers.

In this game Sonic is framed for speed, he can roll up in shape of ball just like in pinball. But the depressing part was the execution as it ends up being jerky. The Platforming element is far away from the original SONIC GAMES in quality terms. Sonic spinball is a game of skill and intuition as you have to figure out what is needed to be done and at the same time take care of the order in which it should be executed. Then only you would be able to control the Hedgehog.

Since the game is not much convincing as it comes across as a bad platform game and a pinball game stuck together one can still find some bright moments in the game such as 4 enormous level of pinball action, Pinball mini games after each boss, a different Sonic feel and up to 4 players can get into action in this fast paced frenzy.

If you are thinking of playing pinball then this game could serve your purpose with integrity. As for the SONIC GAME lovers this does not place good impression.
