Sonic Rush - Nintendo DS
SONIC GAMES, a highly popular series due to the side scrolling fun in the initial versions. However, what followed in the SONIC THE HEDGEHOG GAMES was a variation from what the original fun games had to offer. Sonic ventured into every genre, racing, adventure, RPG, you name it. This somewhat reduced the charm, and the real sonic game fun was limited to the earlier editions. The current game that we have on our hands is an ambitious attempt at the side scrolling in the DS format. The game scores well, and it is quite natural that veterans who PLAY SONIC GAMES like this edition.
The storyline follows evil Dr Eggman, who has stolen chaos emeralds and plans to gain ultimate power. He can only be stopped by Sonic or Blaze the Cat, the second playable character. Apart from Eggman's real self, there is an alternate dimension entity existing, named Eggman Nega. To tackle both the enemies, Sonic has to play through the levels and thwart their attempts for domination. You can play as Sonic or Blaze, each having their angle of the story, but nearly identical gameplay. Blaze is presented as the guardian of the emerald sols.
Apart from the regular gameplay of rushing through the artistically designed levels, the sonic game has added some elements to enemy handling. A Dash feature is provided which allows you to blast through enemies by immediate increase to top speed. However, the game is more based on running through the levels, and occasionally executing these moves, which require insane reflexes. In order to avoid bumping into enemies and losing health, you need to dash through or avoid them completely, both of them not being easy. Another addition to the movement is the trick system, which is used to replenish the Dash meter. When you jump in the air, you can perform a series of moves like whirl, flip, spin etc which fill up the Dash meter. You would have plenty of such opportunities, and this will guarantee you frequent Dash attacks. Each character also has mid air moves, to damage the enemies when locked inside an enemy filled chamber.
The SONIC GAME makes efficient usage of the two screens of the DS. High jumps can take you to the upper screen while a fall below can lead you to the lower screen. Even in the final boss fights, one screen is limited to the action while the other has the enemy stats and a cheerleader figure to push you on. Sonic has Tails while in Blaze's case, it is Cream. While playing the SONIC GAME, you would notice that the in game dialogue and conversations are a sore, with repetitive dialogues being hurtled around.
Although the online sonic gameplay is missing, the game allows you to play a two player race mode where characters are competing amongst themselves to finish the level.
All in all, this SONIC THE HEDGEHOG GAME picks up every successful element from the previous SONIC GAMES, and gives you a reason to definitely play the SONIC GAME.
